Ashford fought out a low key match at home to Thame United on Tuesday evening, the final score being one apiece.

A stiff breeze made football rather difficult and the ball spent more time than it should in the air.  A poor attendance did not help to create much atmosphere and without doubt the game was typical of many matches at the end of the season when neither club has much to fight for.  That is not say there was a paucity of endeavour as there wasn’t but both sides struggled to find the net.  Thame had the clearer opportunities but there wasn’t too much in it.

The second half livened up with two quick goals, as the Tangerines resumed in the ascendancy, seeing themselves rewarded with a goal of quality scored by Tom Howard on 51 minutes.  In a moment of real class, he dribbled his way along the penalty area before striking home from an acute angle.  Unfortunately, just as it seemed Ashford might take control, an equaliser was conceded five minutes later when a quick break from the visitors saw Thame’s Dan West completely unmarked and a competent header gave the otherwise excellent Tyler Tobin in Ashford’s goal no chance.

That sent the pendulum swinging and Ashford needed two incredible goal line clearances from Romario Jonas and Tobin to prevent another goal.  The game plodded on but neither side could break the deadlock and a draw looked the most likely outcome and so it proved.

Ashford were without key players last night but they should be back for Saturday’s clash with Hartley Wintney at Short Lane.  The visitors are right in the promotion mix but one hopes that Ashford will be straining every sinew to avenge a very unlucky defeat at Hartley Wintney earlier in the season, the winning goal being conceded deep in stoppage time, when a draw was the very least that Ashford deserved.

Nothing yet has been heard from the League concerning the abortive trip to Marlow last Saturday.  We believe it would be most unfair if we have to travel there in midweek and our view is that the match should be awarded, given that nothing really hangs on the result, so there will be little effect upon any other club.  At the very least it should be played at Short Lane if the League insists upon it being played.
