Ashford entertained high flying Chalfont St. Peter on Saturday and emerged with a point in a 1-1 draw which was generally felt to be a fair result.

The visitors were keen to cement a play-off place and with Ashford’s ongoing dismal run of results against them, everyone was expecting a tough match.  The teams looked evenly matched though generally and it was the Tangerines who got themselves in front when Scott Weight, fittingly wearing the no. 9 shirt, hammered home a loose ball from the edge of the area on 22 minutes.

Ashford, who were without both Max Webb and Samad Kazi, fought hard for every ball but the visitors equalised on 36 minutes with a penalty from Louis Stead, following a foul by Mitchal Gough in the area.

The second half produced no more goals but two sending offs in a match that hardly had a bad foul.  Gough was the first one to go and it was just about the softest sending off ever, the player receiving a second yellow card presumably for a handball in an aerial challenge, on the say of a very busy assistant.  Ashford were incensed and it wasn’t long before Tommy Brunton, himself the victim of a poor challenge presumably unseen by the official, launched himself into a tackle that took both man and ball and he was fortunate to only see a yellow card.  His “victim” though saw fit to retaliate in a far more violent manner so he had to go as well, pausing only to buy a burger or something like that before being finally ushered off.  The referee either failed or didn’t want to see the player going into the crowd.

It has to be said that the referee made life difficult for himself with the decision to send Gough off in the first place but after that, common sense returned, as did parity and Ashford were reasonably satisfied with the point against a club they haven’t beaten since 2001.

The next match is away to Marlow next Saturday whilst the Under-18’s are due to be away to Hendon on Wednesday.
