It’s FA Cup time again and, unlike last season, we have been lucky enough to have a second consecutive home match and thus we welcome Corinthian-Casuals on Saturday who play at the same level as us, but in the Bostick (ex-Ryman) League in Division One South.  Like us they suffered a home defeat, against Carshalton on Monday, but previously won 5-0 at East Grinstead Town on the Saturday

To get to this stage, we overcame Wembley of course (possibly not quite as easily as the 3-0 score line suggests but good enough) whilst Casuals had two tough encounters against Hythe Town, who forced a draw in the first game and who were leading until close to the end, but then losing 1-3 at home to Casuals in the replay.

As is normal, should the scores be level today at 90 minutes, there is no extra time.  The tie will go straight to a replay at Cor-Cas’ ground on Tuesday evening.

Despite the comparative closeness of our two grounds, this will be the first meeting between the clubs since January 2004, when we locked horns in Division One South of the Isthmian League.  Prior to that we played each other in various competitions including the FA Vase and the Surrey Senior Cup but the match that will always stand out for Ashford supporters of a certain vintage was the one on 10 May 1997 when the clever Fixture Secretary (or could it have been pot luck) arranged for the two clubs to play each other on the final day of the season.  It was our visitors’ one and only season in the CCL and they were already guaranteed promotion as Ashford’s ground was not then good enough to go up.  The game though would settle the league championship.  Ashford had to win but a draw or defeat would mean that Casuals would be the champions.

In front of a huge crowd by CCL reckoning, Ashford enjoyed a purple day and came out on top by four goals to nil courtesy of strikes from Paul German 2 and Andy Frost 2.

On other occasions Ashford were not quite as sparkling, one occasion being Cor-Cas’ home game in that same season, when they won by 5 goals to 1.

Unless there is a reply of today’s match, the 1st Team are without a fixture in midweek but make the short trip to Uxbridge next Saturday, which will be a rehearsal for when we meet them in the FA Trophy in October.  There may be an U18 Friendly on Wednesday against a Woking side.

It is also a “big” day for the Ladies tomorrow as they travel to Headington Ladies for their very first foray into the Women’s FA Cup and we wish Will and the girls the very best of luck.  Headington play in the Thames Valley Counties Womens Football League and the address of the ground for anyone going to support them is Harcourt Hill Campus, Oxford, OX2 9AT

CAN VISITORS PLEASE NOTE THAT IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL RULES, ASHFORD ONLY PRODUCE THEIR MATCH PROGRAMMES ON LINE AND THAT FOR THE MATCH AGAINST CORINTHIAN-CASUALS CAN BE ACCESSED ON THE CLUB WEB SITE:  http://www.ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com.  Simply click on 1ST TEAM and select programmes.

We are aware that this decision has annoyed one or two ground hoppers and visitors which is not our intention but the financial sense of not spending £70 every home game and then only selling 10 at the most is irrefutable.  Team sheets will be available though
