In their first pre-season game at Short Lane on Saturday, Ashford enjoyed a reasonably comfortable match, winning by three goals to one against a youthful Woking side.

The outcome was largely determined within the opening ten minutes when Ashford took what turned out to be an unassailable lead.  Both were quite similar goals, coming from defensive mistakes by the visitors, as firstly Jack Beadle and then newcomer Janes Cottee, signed from Westfield, took full advantage, both producing crisp and confident finishes.

Ashford’s football at this stage was easy on the eye and a third goal arrived on 21 minutes when Jamal Harvey made no mistake.

Woking had plenty of skilful players on show but with Romario Jonas and Elliott Poley looking solid at the back, they were unable to make an impression.  Yahya El-Khabouche, previously with Corinthian-Casuals also took the eye in midfield alongside Tommy Brunton.

The second half, with its inevitable rash of changes became gradually more scrappy with Ashford unable to reproduce too many of the sparkling moments that had lit up the first period.  Woking looked more purposeful and seconds after Mark Bitmead had gone mightily close for Ashford, they had the last say as they went down the other end and pulled one back on 68 minutes.

That finished the scoring and Ashford now go on to what is likely to be a far tougher test when they entertain newly promoted Farnborough on Tuesday evening, at Short Lane, kick-off 7.45 p.m.  Admission will once again be £5 (£3 OAP’s and free for children under-16)
