In a hastily arranged friendly, an Ashford squad created a degree of unwelcome history by losing to Westfield on Saturday by the incredible score of 8 goals to 5.

The match was played on a small pitch at Egham Leisure Centre and Ashford had more or less two full squads present.  Assistant Manager Mark Green opted to start with the majority of last season’s side in the first half mostly all replaced by a squad of newcomers in the second period.  It was a normal enough match in the opening period and there were five goals, Ashford coming off ahead by 3 goals to 2.

Both sides though suffered something of a defensive calamity as the game wore on, especially Ashford.  The lead had changed on numerous occasions but when Ashford went ahead again at 5-4 with around 15 minutes left on the clock one wondered if that was the end of the scoring.  Far from it as some wretched defending and indifferent goal keeping, in particular, rather handed the match to Westfield on a plate as they scored four goals in the final minutes to finish three goals ahead.

Ashford won’t be too disheartened:  against a decent side they played some very good football at times and some of the newcomers showed enough to suggest they will come into serious contention.  For the record, Ashford’s goals were scored by Mark Bitmead 2 (1 pen), Max Webb and then in the second half by Jabir Laraba and Jamal Harvey.

Manager Ben Murray will be back for Tuesday’s match away to Spelthorne Sports, which kicks off at 7.45 p.m.  Ben will be providing an article upon the squad for the new season in due course once it has been finalised.
