Ashford started life in the CCL with promise in the early stages of this match and looked the better footballing side with Cove restricted to playing the long ball. The visiting keeper was by far the busiest in the first third of the game. Tommy Brunton started well along with the returning Mark Bitmead whom between them kept the Cove back line occupied for long periods. Cove had now got themselves into the game and on twenty minutes poor marking left Callum Eagle in space to pick up a loose ball and fire it home from twelve yards.
Ashford to their credit stuck to the task in hand and the patience paid off on forty five minutes when the excellent Brunton found Bitmead with a fantastic through ball, Bitmead still had a lot to do but found the back of the net with a delightful finish to even the scoreline on the stoke of half time.
The second half started at a ferocious pace, the first twenty five minutes it wall all Ashford. Cove defended with excellence with the aid of the Keeper. Max Webb whom has returned to the from University found himself in space and unleashed an effort worthy of a goal which struck the crossbar, Ashford continued to create chance upon chance and but fro some stalwart defending and Goalkeeping the The Ash Trees could well have scored two or three more. It wasn't to be and the one chance that Cove managed to retain the ball and make some ground a mix up defensively gifted Cove the winner through Adam Everiss on seventy five minutes.
The Ash Trees continued to apply the pressure with no reward, this very young but talented side are exiting to watch especially Dan Fleming who is a real handful. Ben has now got the Team playing his brand of football which suits this young squad.
